On the Market: A family-friendly courtyard community for $789,000

When Scott and Renay Shaw were house hunting in 2011, they'd been married for just about a year. When they visited a property in Headhouse Court, they were drawn as much to the home itself as they were to the sense of community.

"The enclosed gated community living in a residential neighborhood where focus is on family and community is a big draw," Renay said.

The couple now has two children, and the Shaws said living in the Meredith catchment community has helped them to create  the kind of family environment they were seeking.

"Everyone is family-oriented and friendly with everyone working together to make sure living in Headhouse Court provides the best experience," Scott said.

The four-bedroom home features a fully finished basement, which the Shaws say is among their favorite rooms. The basement renovation was among the largest projects the couple undertook after moving in. Elsewhere, they painted and had the hardwood floors refinished.

Their other favorite area in the 2,050-square-foot home is upstairs. "The third-floor deck is used every night for relaxing time," Renay said.

The home also includes deeded parking and a shared courtyard space within the community.

"Queen Village — and specifically Headhouse Court — provides a gated community of the most friendly families," Scott said

The family also has enjoyed proximity to restaurants and the Headhouse Square farmers market.

"We love the neighborhood," Renay said.

Even while they have fallen in love with their courtyard community, the Shaws said they want to provide their children with the kinds of experiences they had growing up in the suburbs.

"We are already planning our move back to the neighborhood as empty nesters," Renay said.
