On the Market: Fairmount home with character for $629,900
"So many homes in Philly are completely gutted and lose the original woodwork and features," says homeowner Shelly Stangl. She tried to preserve as much as she could during extensive renovations.

When Shelly Stangl bought her Fairmount home in 2010, she was drawn to one thing.
"The character," she said. "So many homes in Philly are completely gutted and lose the original woodwork and features."
Her four-bedroom home was built in the early part of the 20th century, and Stangl said those period details are among her favorites.
"My house still has hardwood floors with dark inlays, beautiful stained glass windows … and a gorgeous carved cedar closet from the 1920s," she said.
The property features an original, built-in wardrobe in an upstairs bedroom. Another bedroom includes an antique, stained-glass door. Stangl said other features from previous owners also made the cut as she made other improvements in the intervening years.
"I did a lot of renovations, as well as home maintenance updates," Stangl said.
Light fixtures from the 1950s remained in the home, but she installed a new kitchen.
"I completely updated the kitchen with upscale granite countertops, backsplash and flooring," she said. Her renovation also included a new breakfast bar in the kitchen, a new powder room on the first floor, and new wallpaper downstairs.
Upstairs, Stangl worked to update the master bathroom as well, adding natural rock flooring and tiling as well as a new vanity and toilet.
Her renovations also included maintenance updates like a new air conditioning unit for the second zone of the home, a new roof, carpets and paint. She also updated the roof deck, which turned out to be among her favorite spaces in the 1,775-square-foot home.
"I also loved having two outdoor spaces," she said. "I used the backyard with some English garden-type decorations, and the roof deck was great for enjoying the views with a cold beer."
Downstairs, renovations focused on making space.
"I installed 10 shelving units and a new washer and dryer in the basement to maximize the storage," she said.
Stangl has relocated to the Philippines and recently decided it's time to sell her Philadelphia home.
