On the Market: Eclectic barn in Malvern for $1.8M

When Kathleen Jamieson and her late husband purchased a rundown ranch house in Malvern in 1997, they had planned to start from scratch and make their own creation.

It was the location that drew them, Jamieson said, nestled over four acres of landscaped grounds in Radnor Hunt Country in Chester County.

Jamieson, an interior designer for more than 30 years with her own firm Mock Fox Interiors, had created several homes of her own before this one. They were all made to look like old barns, the style she had grown to love.

"I like the openness and high ceilings," Jamieson said. "I don't like walls, I like being able to see everything."

Although Jamieson wasn't new to designing homes, this would be the first time she and her husband would relocate as empty nesters.

They had loved their prior home where they raised their five children nearby in Unionville so much, that they decided to replicate this one with the same architect – only on a smaller scale.

This new home on Davis Road had the same layout with half the size. They demolished the old ranch house on the property, and created a made-to-look old barn with 5,500-square-feet of living space with three bedrooms and three-and-a-half baths.

The interior, which Jamieson describes as "Euro-chic," features an eclectic mix of designs and furnishings.

"We tried to use all authentic materials when we were building it," Jamieson said. "It's really different and very unusual."

From 100-year-old barn beams, to vaulted ceilings and antique doors and furniture, every square inch of the home is a surprise.

In the kitchen, Jamieson put in a copper table, and hung antique copper pots and artwork on the ceiling, which she said gives the room a "very Provence feeling."

From that room, the backyard oasis can be accessed where there's a garden filled with perennials and roses, a stream, lap pool and spa area, and an outdoor summer kitchen.

"I try to keep the garden whimsical and light and airy," Jamieson said.

The home also has a four-car garage, a walk-out basement, and a green house.

Jamieson is selling the home now to scale down a bit, and has listed the home for $1.8 million.

She is looking to stay in the area, and possibly move to a small carriage house.

"I'll probably renovate again, but I don't want to build again from scratch," she said.
