Neighborhood group endorses Kensington apartment project

A community group has endorsed plans for a 178-unit apartment project with 20,000 feet of street-level retail at the current site of the Woods Bros. lumber yard in East Kensington.

A community group has endorsed plans for a 178-unit apartment project with 20,000 feet of street-level retail at the current site of the Woods Bros. lumber yard in East Kensington.

The East Kensington Neighbors Association voted 61-to-33 at a meeting last week in favor of the so-called Woods Square project at 2621 Frankford Ave., the group's zoning chair, John Theobald, said.

Developer Michael Vegh's plans for the two-acre site show three five-floor residential structures rising over a green roof atop a single-story podium of shops and parking. The project will be reviewed in the coming months by the city's Civic Design Review committee, Theobald said.
