If you fear for your life driving in Philadelphia, you might have good reason.
The city has the worst crash rate in the country among the 10 largest cities and is ranked 188 overall in a list of 193 cities, according to a report released today by Allstate Insurance Co.
Philadelphia drivers have an accident every 6.4 years, on average. By comparison, drivers in the safest city, Sioux Falls, S.D., have an accident every 13.5 years, Allstate said.
What gives in Philadelphia? Narrow streets? Winding roads such as Lincoln Drive? The interminably congested Schuylkill Expressway?
The safest of the 10 biggest cities was Phoenix, which in recent years surpassed Philadelphia as the nation’s fifth-largest city. Drivers in that sprawling metropolis have an accident every 9.2 years, according to Allstate, which said it accounted for 11.3 percent of U.S. automobile policies.
The Allstate data do not include cities in Massachusetts.
