Philadelphia jobs up 40,500 over last six years

Total Philadelphia employment increased by 40,500 jobs from January 2010 to January 2016, with the most growth in education and healthcare, and leisure and hospitality, together adding 35,400 jobs over six years. Employment declined by 9,000 jobs in government and 4,000 in manufacturing, Philadelphia city controller Alan Butkovitz reported Wednesday.

Total Philadelphia employment increased by 40,500 jobs from January 2010 to January 2016, with the most growth in education and healthcare, and leisure and hospitality, together adding 35,400 jobs over six years. Employment declined by 9,000 jobs in government and 4,000 in manufacturing, Philadelphia city controller Alan Butkovitz reported Wednesday.

There was also job growth in professional business services, in trade, retail and utilities and in construction, but slowing in financial activity employment and retail.

The controller also reported that monthly real estate sales totaled 938 in February, which marked a 22 percent increase over last February. Most of the sales occurred in South Philadelphia and Fishtown.

Monthly sales tax revenues totaled $13.7 million, which is a 21 percent increase over the same month last year, he reported.
