Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection said today that it is accepting applications for alternative-energy projects that will be funded with $6 million in grants.

The Alternative Fuel Incentive Grant program is aimed at developing cleaner-burning, less-polluting forms of transportation, which also reduce dependence on foreign oil, department secretary John Hanger said.

The projects selected must create jobs and spur economic development in the state, the department said.

To be eligible, projects must have begun after July 1 and be completed within two years.

Applications must be submitted through the eGrant system at www.grants.dcnr.state.pa.us. Paper applications will not be accepted. The application deadline is Aug. 27.    - Paul Schweizer
