Gas up 1 cent in Phila. area, down in South Jersey

The price of gas gained 1 cent on one side of the Delaware and shed 1 cent on the other.

The average for a gallon of regular no-lead was up a penny, to $2.74, in the five-county Philadelphia area, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

The average declined 1 cent, to $2.51, in South Jersey.

The national average was unchanged, at $2.66.

Today, three states have an average gas price of $2.50 or below: Missouri ($2.48), South Carolina ($2.50), and Oklahoma ($2.50), according to the auto club.

Alaska ($3.40) and Hawaii ($3.33) have the nation's highest averages, AAA's national organization said.

The diesel average was up 1 cent, to $3.05, in the Philly area, and unchanged, at $2.73, in South Jersey.

The national diesel average was unchanged, at $2.83.

Meanwhile, oil prices fell as workers headed back to deep sea platforms that were bypassed by a rapidly weakening storm in the Gulf of Mexico.

Ida, once a Category 1 hurricane, was downgraded to a tropical storm Monday and then lost even that status today as its winds lost their punch.

Producers like Royal Dutch Shell and Anadarko reported no damage to facilities and said flights to platforms and rigs in the Gulf would begin today.

Benchmark crude for December delivery fell 9 cents $79.34 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Even Monday, when Tropical Storm Ida still posed a potential threat to Gulf platforms, it appeared that the affects of a weakened dollar played a more significant role as oil prices rose $2 to $79.43.
