Philadelphia International Airport is getting $4.9 million worth of additional closed-circuit television cameras to monitor passenger and baggage screening areas from the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

The new cameras, along with upgrades to existing cameras, are aimed at strengthening airport security, said Philadelphia's federal security director Robert Ellis. Closed-circuit television systems used in hundreds of airports nationwide "provide many benefits including improved security, better personnel deployment, and assistance with the resolution of suspicious items," Ellis said. Nine airports are receiving a total of $24.6 million, TSA said.    - Linda Loyd
