AECOM Technology Corp., a construction-management company based in Los Angeles, has won a $15 million contract from the New Jersey Department of Transportation to replace two drawbridges and a traffic circle at the Shore.
The state will use about $70 million of federal stimulus money on the project.
The project, which is to total $250 million, will eliminate two drawbridges, in Ocean City and Somers Point, and remove the Somers Point Circle, with improvements to MacArthur Boulevard.
The state began the project in Ocean and Atlantic Counties in 2006, labeling it of critical importance because the roadway is an emergency evacuation route for Ocean County.
The roadway targeted for improvement extends from the intersection of Routes 9 and 52 in Somers Point, south along Route 52 (MacArthur Boulevard), through the Somers Point Circle and over Great Egg Harbor Bay to Ocean City at Ninth Street and Bay Avenue.
The state has said that travel lanes will be open during the tourist season, with some lane closures scheduled during the off-season.
This second of two project phases is scheduled for completion in 2012.
