Nanotech group awards $2 million in grants

The Philadelphia-based Nanotechnology Institute today said it had made $2 million in grants to 30 scientists to develop nanotechnology-related intellectual property, and to create and expand high-tech companies and jobs in Pennsylvania.

The group said it made "core grants" of $300,000 to $537,000 to scientist groups developing nanoscale cellular probes; nanofibrous scaffolds for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, and array piezoelectric nonocantilever sensors to detect immune responses to therapeutic monoclonal antibodies and breast cancer markers.

The institute was founded in 2000 by Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania, the University of Pennsylvania, and Drexel University. Its Web site is www.nanotechinstitute.org.    - Inquirer Staff
