Kmart to close Eagleville, Norristown stores

Kmart plans to close stores in Eagleville and Norristown and lay off 109 workers.

Kmart plans to close stores in Eagleville and Norristown and lay off 109 workers.

Kmart spokeswoman Kimberly Freely said the stores at 3200 W. Ridge Pike, Eagleville, and 2700 DeKalb Pike, East Norriton Township, are being closed for "business reasons. They were under-performing locations," Freely said.

Fifty-four are losing jobs at Kmart in Eagleville, and 55 in Norristown.

Kmart said on Feb. 26 that it would close 24 underperforming stories nationwide. No other Kmart stores in Pennsylvania are closing, Freely said.

Kmart said it recorded a $45 million pre-tax charge relating to the closings and expects to record an additional $24 million charge in the first half of 2009 as the stores "wind down operations."

Kmart notified the state of Pennsylvania on Feb. 26 that the workforce reductions would take place on or after May 8.
