The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine has given a $1 million grant to Calypso Medical, a Seattle company, to develop a system to more precisely target proton therapy for cancerous tumors, Calypso announced today.

Calypso currently makes the GPS for the Body system for traditional radiation treatments. It uses electromagnetic transponders placed in or around the tumor to provide information on the location of the tumor during radiation therapy.

Penn is currently using the technology for prostate cancer treatment, Calypso said.
