Southwest Airlines, Philadelphia's second-largest passenger carrier, announced today that it will enter into a partnership with Canadian low-fare carrier WestJet Airlines - a first step to Southwest flying internationally for the first time.
The agreement will combine the routes, flight schedules and fares of both airlines by late 2009.
Travelers will be able to use Southwest's Web site for booking flights on the Canadian airline as well as on Southwest. The two companies will share frequent-flier programs.
"We are quickly moving forward with our plans to enter the international market," Southwest's CEO Gary Kelly said.
