Philadelphia-area consumers paid 31.3 percent more for electricity in December than the national U.S. city average, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

Prices for electricity in this region have been higher than the national average for over a decade.

Consumers in the region also paid more than average for natural gas bought from utilities, but paid about the same for gasoline, the agency said.

The average price of electricity in the region was 0.151 cents per kilowatt hour, compared to 0.115 cents nationally. Both figures are up about 27 percent over the last decade.

The report covered Southeastern Pennsylvania; South Jersey; New Castle County, Del.; and Cecil County, Md.
