Apple giving away popular apps, games
To celebrate the fifth anniversary of its App Store on Wednesday, Apple is giving away "five landmark games and give groundbreaking apps," according to the store's website.
The now-free apps, downloadable by iPhone and iPad users, are Barefoot World Atlas, Day One (Journal/Diary), How to Cook Everything, Over (adds captions, logos, more to photos) and Traktor DJ for iPhone.
The games: Badland, Infinity Blade II, Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery EP, Tiny Wings and Where's My Water?
The freebies were already available this morning, and will be for what Apple calls only "a limited time."
The App Store started with 500 apps and had 10 million downloads the first weekend. By the end of 2008, Facebook was the No. 1 app, with nearly 5 million downloads.
In May, total downloads for all apps reached 50 billion, according to the Cupertino, Calif.-based company.
