United Parcel Service pilots overwhelmingly ratified a new five-year labor contract that includes an immediate pay hike of 14.65 percent and a 3 percent annual wage increase through Sept. 1, 2021, the company and the pilots' union said Wednesday.
The agreement, which covers 2,579 pilots, is effective Thursday and includes a $60,000 signing bonus in place of retroactive pay for captains and $40,000 for first officers, plus improved pension benefits.
UPS, which has 3,100 employees at its air freight hub in Philadelphia, owns 212 acres on Hog Island Road including a 681,000-square foot sorting building and a 50-acre aircraft ramp, near the main east-west runways at Philadelphia International Airport.
The Philadelphia air hub is one of four in the country -- second in size to Louisville, Ky. -- and can sort 95,000 packages and documents an hour. UPS operates an average 40 daily flights in Philadelphia.
"UPS is gratified that our crewmembers have ratified this win-win contract offer," said UPS spokesman Mike Mangeot. "Our pilots do a great job of flying our global express network, and we are pleased to reward them for their contributions to our company."
