While the Philadelphia area ranks high in the number of advanced industry jobs, it ranks below average in growth of those jobs over the last few years, according to a study released Thursday by the Brookings Institution, a Washington nonprofit policy organization.

Brookings defines advanced industry as types of business in which more than 20 percent of employees have significant knowledge in science, technology, engineering, and math and in which research and development spending is high on a per-worker basis.

The report updates similar research which showed that Philadelphia ranked 12th in the number of advanced industry jobs, but 76th of 100 U.S. metropolitan areas in the percentage of growth of those jobs from 2010 to 2013. During that time, the average national employment growth in advanced industries was 1.5 percent. In Philadelphia, advanced industry jobs grew 0.7 percent. By contrast, advanced industry jobs grew 4.5 percent in Orem, Utah, and 3.9 percent in Austin, Texas, while falling 0.1 percent in Palm Bay, Fla.

Three auto industries and four digital services accounted for 65 percent of the nation's high-value advanced-industries growth since 2013.
