Daily News again wins top prize in annual Keystone Press Awards

For 2nd year in a row, People Paper captures sweepstakes honors as best large newspaper in Pa.

FOR THE second straight year, the Daily News has won the top honor among the state's largest newspapers in the 2015 Keystone Press Awards given by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.

The People Paper walked away with the coveted Sweepstakes award by capturing 23 awards in the various categories of the contest - nine first places, nine second places and five honorable mentions.

The winning entries included stories in breaking news, business and sports, columns, page design, photos, graphics - and, for the first time this year, video.

First-place winners

* Personality profile: Stephanie Farr, about Michael Grant, "Philly Jesus."

* Column: Political columnist John Baer.

* Business: Don Russell, about beer-garden licensing.

* Feature beat: Don Russell as Joe Sixpack.

* Sports event: Sports staff, about the death of legendary broadcaster Bill Campbell in October.

* Niche publication: Sports staff, for "Futbol Fever," a World Cup section, with Al Dia.

* News photo: Steven M. Falk, for "A Hot July" (above).

* Front-page design: Jon Snyder.

* Breaking news: News staff, for "Crossing the Line."

Second-place winners

* News feature: Jason Nark, for "It's Been Murder," about an Ohio family dealing with the discovery of the bodies of two Frankford teens slain in 1968.

* Distinguished writing: Stephanie Farr, for stories about "Philly Jesus"; a man who took his wife back to Cambodia; and a dying 3-year-old honored by police.

* Business: Dana DiFilippo, for "Supporting Role," about efforts to save the Boyd Theater on Chestnut Street.

* Sports event: Sports staff, for the release of Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson.

* Sports beat: Frank Seravalli, for Flyers coverage.

* Feature beat: Drew Lazor, for food writing.

* Niche publication: Howard Gensler, Jerome Maida, Lauren McCutcheon and Matt Nestor, for "Wizard Con," a gathering for the comic community.

* Page design: Jon Snyder, for "Tapped Out," poverty coverage.

* Sports photo: Steven M. Falk, for Imhotep Charter School star Naiheem Santos.

Honorable mentions

* Column: Ronnie Polaneczky.

* Special project: News staff, for the problems of gentrification.

* Sports event: Sports staff, for "Memories of the Palestra."

The awards will be presented at a banquet May 30 in Gettysburg.
