The Center for Gambling Studies at the Rutgers University School of Social Work has received $1.3 million from the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and the New Jersey Department of Health and Human Services for a three-year study of the impact of Internet gambling.

Internet gambling became legal in New Jersey last November.

Through surveys, researchers will first analyze the prevalence of online gambling and then follow-up to determine the impact on individuals.

The studies will identify what type of person chooses online gambling, who develops problems, and how those problems are different from those caused by other forms of legal gambling, the gambling studies center said.
