CBS launches streaming TV service in Philadelphia, 13 other cities

CBS Corp. launched on Thursday a $6 a month streaming service in Philadelphia and 13 other cities, a day after Time Warner Inc. said it would offer HBO as a stand-alone Internet service in 2015.

CBS Corp. launched on Thursday a $6 a month streaming service in Philadelphia and 13 other cities, a day after Time Warner Inc. said it would offer HBO as a stand-alone Internet service in 2015.

The CBS service streams local CBS stations and makes available thousands of CBS shows on-demand for the monthly subscription.

Entertainment companies increasingly are offering online content that can be bought outside the traditional pay-TV bundle, threatening Comcast Corp. and other pay-TV providers. Monthly streaming services such as Hulu and Netflix currently offer some CBS shows for streaming, but the CBS All Access service will offer a more complete catalog.

"With video consumption habits changing all the time, it is very important that we continue to provide the best local news, entertainment and sports via a service like CBS All Access," Peter Dunn, president of CBS Television Stations, said in a statement.

"Television stations have been the fabric of local broadcasting for 75 years, and today's announcement is part of paving the way for the next 75," Dunn said.

The broadcast TV network says 15 current prime-time shows, such as "The Good Wife" and "Survivor", will be available the day after they air on the service.

A CBS spokeswoman that said NFL games on CBS will not be streamed because of rights issues, but that other professional and college sports will be streamed.
