New Jersey's utility regulator on Wednesday approved Public Service Electric and Gas Co.'s $1.22 billion "Energy Strong" plan to protect its electric and gas systems from severe storms.

The plan, a scaled-back version of a PSE&G proposal to spend $2.6 billion on grid-hardening projects, includes $620 million to protect, raise or relocate 29 switching and substations that were damaged by water in recent storms; $350 million to upgrade 250 miles of low-pressure cast iron natural gas mains; $100 million to create system redundancies; $100 million for smart-grid technologies; and $50 million to protect gas facilities from floods.
