Philadelphia City Council, which must approve the proposed $1.9 billion sale of Philadelphia Gas Works, has chosen a Boston area consultant, Concentric Energy Advisors Inc., to review the sale on its behalf.

Council posted a notice of intent to contract with Concentric, which is based in Marlborough, Mass., to advise it on the details of the proposed sale, as well as a second contract exploring alternatives to a sale.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed. A spokeswoman for Council President Darrell L. Clarke said a formal announcement is expected later Monday.

According to the notice, council chose Concentric over nine other consultants that sought one or both of the PGW advisory contracts: Enovation Partners; Estrada Hinojosa & Company Inc.; Fineman Krekstein & Harris P.C.; Integrated Transport Planning Inc.; Janney Montgomery Scott L.L.C.; NW Financial Group L.L.C.; Ponderosa Advisors L.L.C.; Samuel Hopkins; and The Brattle Group Inc.
