Toyota to pay $16 million

A California district attorney has reached a $16 million settlement with Toyota Motor Corp. over a safety recall of vehicles that were at risk for unintended acceleration. Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas on Friday announced the settlement of a suit against the carmaker that claimed deceptive business practices and sought $2,500 per violation under the state's Unfair Business Practices Act.

Gov. kills PennDot contract

The Corbett administration cancelled an $8.6 million PennDot contract with a Colorado firm implicated in a recent grand jury investigation of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. The PennDot contract for information technology services with Ciber Inc. of Denver will be put out to bid again, Corbett's office said. Dennis Miller, 51, a Ciber vice president, was one of eight people charged last month with crimes involving bribes, gifts, and campaign contributions in the awarding of turnpike contracts. - Paul Nussbaum

BET buys more apartments

BET Investments of Horsham has bought the 216-unit garden-style Lincoln Woods Apartments on Germantown Pike in Lafayette Hill for $25.5 million. The 10-year loan for the purchase was arranged through Fannie Mae by Berkadia Commercial Mortgage L.L.C. in Horsham. It represented 80 percent of total acquisition costs plus short-term capital budget. BET has acquired 1,000 apartment units in the region in the last six months. - Alan J. Heavens

Hospitals name interim CEO

Catholic Health East and Trinity Health, which plan to complete a merger of the two health systems next month, named Judith Persichilli interim chief executive of the combined entity. Persichilli has been president of CEO of Catholic Health East, based in Newtown Square, since May 2010. John R. Swedish, former president and chief executive of Trinity, was slated to become CEO of the merged nonprofit, but he left Trinity in February to become CEO of WellPoint Inc. - Harold Brubaker

Firm plans Calif. casino

Penn National Gaming Inc. of Wyomissing, Pa., said it had agreed with the Jamul Indian Village to jointly develop and operate a $360 million casino and resort on the tribe's land in San Diego County, Calif. Construction is set for late this year, the company said. - Reid Kanaley
