7 things to do in Lackawanna County this summer

Summer is in full swing, and there’s only so many times you can pack up the family and go to the beach before everyone starts to yearn for a change of scenery. Why not take a short day or weekend trip to a nearby locale? Lackawanna county, home of the fictional Dunder Mifflin paper company that stole our hearts with The Office, is just a stone’s throw away and offers a plethora of fun and unique summer activities.

Farmers Markets

Lackawanna County is full of produce picked fresh and always home grown. The Co-Op Farmer’s Market is open three days a week, 12pm to 6pm now until Thanksgiving Eve. The South Side Farmer’s Market is open on Saturdays from 10am until 2pm. Your little ones will have fun learning all about farming fruits and vegetables.

Lackawanna River Heritage Trail

For those looking to get in a bit of adventure and exercise Lackawanna River Heritage Trail (LRHT) is the perfect place to go. As part of a trail spanning over 70 miles along the Lackawanna River, the LRHT is a popular destination for travelers from across the US to bike and explore the trails. The LRHT is the perfect activity for a day of physical activity while admiring the beautiful foliage of Northern Pennsylvania.

Outdoor concerts are a summer must do and the Live Nation Pavilion at Montage Mountain hosts a variety of popular acts like Blink 182 and Brantley Gilbert. Spend an evening listening to music while enjoying the fresh outdoor air. There is something for everyone running all season long.

The Peach Music Festival

The Peach Music Festival takes place every summer at the Live Nation Pavilion at Montage Mountain. The festival was started by the Allman Brothers and continues to present a lineup of impressive bands. This year the festival takes place from August 11th – 14th and promises to be a festival to remember with a lineup that includes, Gregg Allman and The String Cheese Incident and the Trey Anastasio Band. 

Montage Mountain Water Park

The Montage Mountain Water Park is an exciting way to enjoy the outdoors while still relaxing and staying refreshed. The park offers countless attractions, from the water park slides to a zip rider experience and cabana rentals for lounging poolside. The park is a fun option for families and groups of friends to stay cool during the hot summer days. 

The Everhart Museum

Entertain your inner child and defeat childhood fears of the boogeyman at the Everhart Museum. From now through December, the museum is hosting a unique must-see exhibit called Wolves, Magic Mirrors, and Spinning Wheels: The Anatomy of a Fairy Tale. It will explore the history of fairy tales from their origins to recurring themes and political and spiritual messages woven into the classic tales.

Steamtown National Historic Site

Celebrate the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary with free entry to Steamtown between August 25thand 28th. This is a great opportunity to see some older running locomotives in action and experience the Industrial Age’s popular mode of transportation. Be sure to check out Steamtown’s recently renovated 1929 Baldwin Locomotive.
