Higher fuel costs push air fares up again

You're payijng more to fill your gas tank and airlines are paying more for jet fuel, prompting carriers to raise their base fares again, according to this AP story. As the story points out, many fare increases can be followed by fare sales, so the average fare in 2011, despite a dozen increases in the base prices, was up 7 percent at Southwest, the largest carrier in passengers carried.

To clarify the original post and add comment: Jim is right, Southwest carries the most domestic passengers, and has for about the last five or six years. Steve is right in that Delta now has more total domestic and international passengers since it acquired Northwest. Here's a BTS news release for October numbers, the most recent available: http://www.bts.gov/press_releases/2012/bts003_12/html/bts003_12.html
