DOT approves Delta, US Airways slot swap with restrictions

The U.S. Department of Transportation gave tentative approval today to a US Airways and Delta proposed swap of takeoff-and-landing slots at New  York LaGaurdia and Washington Reagan National airports, but with the caveat that the carriers sell some of their slots to new-entrant carriers to increase competition. In a joint statement, the airlines said they were disappointed and that the restrictions mean the deal won't happen in its current form.

The DOT tentative approval called for the airlines to give up 20 of 124 slot pairs they have at LaGuardia and 14 of 42 at National. The point of seeking the swap was for Delta to grow larger at LaGuardia and US Airways to increase service at National.
