Amtrak: PHL fliers' best friend

POSTED: Tuesday, July 10, 2012, 2:27 PM

Very little is likely to be more helpful in the years ahead for PHL air travelers than what Amtrak has planned for the ground in the Northeast. Amtrak's latest updates on its high-speed rail plans have been all over the news, but here for the record, the archives and additional promotional purposes is The Inquirer's story on what all should hope comes to pass. and Paul Nussbaum's sidebar on Amtrak president Joe Boardman calling for more NY tunnel spending.

Can you get us a 4 hour train trip to Pittsburgh? It's ridiculous that with the pullout of Southwest from under 500 mile routes from Philadelphia, US Airways gouges us to the tune of $625 for a round trip to PIT. If we simply had basic 80 mph diesel service, that would get us to Pittburgh in 4 hours. What is wrong with this state?

The best way to improve American air travel is to improve American trains. Trips of under 500 miles are better served by rail, but our airports are clogged with short connecting flights to nearby airports.
