Southwest schedules BOS service--no PHL yet

POSTED: Tuesday, April 14, 2009, 11:19 AM

Southwest announced its schedule for an Aug. 16 launch from Boston's Logan International Airport, and it does not include new flights to PHL yet. The airline will have just 10 roundtrips a day from BOS, five to Baltimore/Washington and five to Chicago Midway. That makes sense, of course, since those are two of their biggest "focus cities," Southwest's term for hubs. Fares start at $89 one way to Chicago and $49 to BWI.

We suspect it's only a matter of time -- how much is anyone's guess -- before Southwest adds PHL nonstops from BOS, one of those highly lucrative routes that has had only legacy carrier competition and high fares for the last couple of years. Not even Southwest is in much of a growth mode right now because of the recession. More info is at www.southwest.com.

Good news for Amtrak. We'll keep using the Acela to Boston.
