American faces scrutiny over NY emergency landing

An American MD-80 jet made an emergency landing at New York's JFK Airport on Wednesday, a story we didn't post here at the time because such incidents are not uncommon. They happen in this country at the rate of about one a week. In this one, the AA jet lost an engine after taking off from LaGuardia before landing safely at JFK.

But there are more developments in the incident: American is now having to defend its maintenance record of the plane and others, as safety officials try to determine if an object was sucked into the engine that failed. Read the latest developments in this AP story.
