US Airways just announced it has applied for its first South American route -- Charlotte to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The flights would start at PHL, with a stop at CLT, if approved by the U.S. Department of Transportation. The U.S. and Brazilian governments recently amended their aviation-rights agreement to allow more flights between the countries. US Airways said the service, using 767 jets, could start later this year but didn't set a date yet.
