As we have mentioned several times before, airlines are hanging on to their fees for checked-baggage and other services that once were included in air fare, despite the steep drop in fuel costs. Happy New Year! The latest version of the story, including words from US Airways CEO Doug Parker, can be found in this AP story.

The only surprise is that the airlines haven't renamed it a "facilities surcharge" or some other meaningless phrase to further disguise it as a blatant rip-off.

Hey, there is another fee the airlines can get..A facilities charge, just for flying on their airline..let's say $5.00. Just like buying a ticket on line..there is a facilities charge for the work to process your ticket...Tell Doug right away..YHS

I posted this comment earlier. I've noticed that in Philly and Atlanta. Passengers are avoid the 15$ fee by checking bags at the gate. The gate agaents are not collecting the fees. WHY?
