Wind alert

Nasty front could bring 45 m.p.h. winds tomorrow.

The atmosphere is about to blow apart one of the most-tranquil periods of weather we can recall around here.

A potent front will approach the region tomorrow, and out ahead of it, powerful southerly and southwesterly winds could become strong enough to rip down power lines and make sport of patio furniture and trash cans.

The winds should be picking up during the day, says the National Weather Service, which expects gusts up to 47 m.p.h. during the evening, along with possibly heavy rains.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed the region under a "slight risk" for severe storms, meaning 58 m.p.h. gusts are at least possible.

In any event, the weather service has posted a wind advisory, in effect for a 12-hour period starting at noon tomorrow.

As much as 1.5 inches of rain could fall in showers and downpours tomorrow and tomorrow night.

Already, the September rainfall in Philadelphia, 4.01 inches, has exceeded the monthy normal.

August also was well-above normal for rain, and that's the first time that's happened in back-to-back months since September 2011.
