Summer afterglow

September among warmest on record – and, hey, the water’s warm.

Despite the weekend cool-down that are bringing local temperatures remarkably close to the averages for Vatican City, this month has a shot to be the second-warmest  September in Philly in records dating to 1874.

As of Friday, the average for the month at Philadelphia International Airport stands at 75.1.

Based on the National Weather Service forecasts for the next five days, the final average would come in at  74.3.

That would be good for No. 2 behind 1881, which finished at 75.4. The others in the top 5 are 1930 and 1831, each 74.1, and 2995, 73.8.

On seven days this month the official temperature has crested at 90 or above; the average for a September is one.

Meanwhile, surf temperatures at the Shore remain quite balmy. Off Atlantic City, it was 70 late Friday, or about 3 degrees above normal, and close to 74 at Cape May, about 4 degrees above the averages.

Unfortunately, the air temperatures down that way are going to rival the ocean's, and stiff northeast breezes will be blowing the sand around. But you almost definitely will avoid the pope crowds.
