Storm aftermath

A week later, a mess and mystery in Glenmoore.

The atmosphere has been on its very best behavior the last few days, but the devastating remants of last Thursday's storms still are very much in evidence out in Glenmoore, Chester County.

As so many locales in the great Philadelphia city-state, Glenmoore is a place, rather than a municipality. It's in Wallace Township in an area that looks like it wandered off a Chester County postcard.

Yesterday afternoon, however, wooded debris and sagging power lines dominated a portion of Little Conestoga Road, some residents remained stunned and mystified about what had happened to them, and power crews remained on the scene.

Yet, other parts of the township appeared all but untouched.

Catherine Poole, who lives in a 22-acre property in the devastated section, believes her neighborhood was whacked by a tornado. The focused damage would buttress that perception.

But the National Weather Service says that's not the case, that the damage appears to be the result of straight-line winds.

Tony Gigi, a meteorologist at the Mount Holly office, said the maximum winds, perhaps 90 m.p.h., evidently targeted a section of Glenmoore. Other neighborhoods may have experienced strong winds, but the most-powerful gusts probably were more selective.

If you've been out that way, you would at least agree that those potent gusts had good taste in neighborhoods.

Not that it's any consolation to the occupants of the 260 or so homes that were out of power for several days.

In the meantime, expect great clean-up weather, until the heat returns on Sunday.
