Snow: This winter's likely to join Top 5

Heavy snow now a sure thing, says National Weather Service.

The winter of 2013-14 is on verge of cracking the top 5 for seasonal snowfall, according to the National Weather Service.

In line with other forecasts we've seen, including John Bolaris's on philly.com, the weather service is calling for 6 to 8 inches in and around the city, and up to 10 north and west.

The snow should start late Wednesday night, start out heavily, and then mix with sleet and rain and perhaps change to rain for awhile from the city south and east.

But changeover calls are all but impossible to nail down 30 hours before anything happens, so stay tuned.

Should the forecast verify, this would become only the fifth season in 130 years of recordkeeping in which 50 inches or more of snow has fallen.

The current total for 2013-14 stands at 43.3

Here are the other four 50-plus winters:

2009-10, 78.7 inches

1995-96, 65.3 inches

1898-99, 55.4 inches

1977-78, 54.9 inches
