Rain reigns

Rivers, streams rising more than expected as rain totals inch toward history.

So far Philadelphia officially has measured close to 3 inches of rain since yesterday, and that has put a charge into the region's rivers and streams.

For the record, the 2011 precipitation total now stands at 44.82 inches, with more coming.

That's about 13 months' worth in 8.25 months.

If it didn't rain, snow, sleet, or hail again until the ball dropped on Times Square on New Year's Eve, 2011 would finish at No. 42 on the all-time precipitation list in the 138-year period of record.

If rainfall is close to normal the rest of the year, 2011 could pass 1996, the reigning king at 56.45.

River and stream levels are cresting higher than anticipated, and it now appears that the Delaware could spill its banks tomorrow morning.

The Schuylkill is over at Philadelphia, and Norristown could be added to that list tomorrow. Flood warnings are up for several streams, including the Perkiomen, Neshaminy, Chester Creek, and East Brandywine.

Widespread major flooding isn't expected, but any more downpours are likely to cause problems.

We noticed one change in the official National Weather Service forecast: The chance of showers has been extended into the weekend.
