Satellite data: Globally, this year one of the warmest ever.

The icy reminder of the approach of winter notwithstanding, the first 10 months of 2010 have been extraordinarily warm, locally and globally. Even though October was the coolest month of the year, according to the most-recent satellite data, it was the second-warmest October in the period of record, which goes back about three decades. Data-keeper John Christy at the University of Alabama said in the race for the warmest year on record, 2010 was in a statistical dead-heat with 1998, the reigning warm king.
