Floods: Jersey drenched
Downpours create traffic nightmares in South Jersey.
After dousing area to the north and west of Philly, the drenching rains focused their ferocity on South Jersey.
In addition to reports of thunderstorm wind damage -- downed power lines forced the closing of Route 70 at Springdale Road in Cherry Hill -- the National Weather Service reported rainfall rates of 1.5 inches an hour or more.
The deluges caused considerable road flooding.
Flash flooding closed a portion of the northbound lanes of I-295 at Exit 26, at Bellmawr. Flooding also shut parts of Route 30 in Winslow Township, andRoute 70 in Southamtpon Township near Four Mile Circle
The rains fell atop ground that has been put to the saturation test this month.
The 0.95 inches of rain measured today officially at Philadelphia International Airport nudged the June total to 8.28 inches.
The record is 10.06, set back in 1938.
