About that drought: Flood watch tonight
A flood watch has been posted for the entire region starting 8 p.m.
On Friday, Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection announced that it was officially worried about a developing drought.
The atmosphere must have taken it personally.
Since that release was issued, close to 2 inches of rain has fallen in Philadelphia, and more elsewhere.
Downpours this morning created a deluge of problems on the Schuylkill Expressway and spill-over roads, and it looks as though another round of heavy rain is coming tonight.
The National Weather Service has posted a flash flood watch for Philadelphia and the neighboring counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, from 8 p.m. into tomorrow morning.
Creeks already are frisky from the earlier rains. As recently as this morning, they were trickling along at a languid, summer pace, but the rains sent them roiling.
For example, the Pennypack Creek at Pine Road was flowing at 66 cubic feet per second at 9 a.m., and jumped to 3,440 at 11 a.m. A flood warning remains in effect along the Pennypack.
The weather service says an addtional 1 to 2 inches of rainfall is possible tonight, and once again some areas could wind up in the bull's-eye.
