Watch: Rosa’s Pizza gets a shoutout on ‘Today’ show

A couple weeks ago, Rosa’s Pizza owner Mason Wartman stopped by "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" to accept a $10,000 check that would help along the efforts of the shop’s “pay it forward” dollar slice initiative. Now, the "Today" show has featured the shop on a segment called “The Upper Crust.”

A couple weeks ago, Rosa's Pizza owner Mason Wartman stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show to accept a $10,000 check that would help along the efforts of the shop's "pay-it-forward" dollar slice initiative. Now, the Today show has featured the shop on a segment called "The Upper Crust."

"On bad days, I wish we didn't do this. On good days, you're like, 'Oh, I'm really glad I did this," Wartman told Today show reporter and Philly native Sheinelle Jones. "At the end of the day, we help so many people that I can't go back."

And anyone who has been to Rosa's knows why that's true. Throughout the shop, colorful Post-It notes hang around as a reminder of customers who came in and donated $1 for an extra charity slice when purchasing some pizza. According to the Today show's report, somewhere around 9,000 slices have been donated.

Wartman tells Today that his shop serves around 40 homeless customers each day, and that it all started at the urging of his customers who cooked up the pay-it-forward idea.

"It's nice to know someone cares," he said. "You know, it's not something that you're begging from someone else. The fact that it was a gift makes it taste just that much better."

Rosa's Pizza is located at 25 S. 11th Street. Slices cost $1, and whole pies go for a cool $8.
