Missouri defensive lineman and SEC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Sam recently announced that he's gay. The announcement makes Sam poised to become the NFL's first openly gay player, provided he's selected in the league's upcoming April draft.
On Monday's episode of The Daily Show, Jon Stewart addressed the news, pointing out the barrier that Sam is toppling while condemning the NFL by sarcastically suggesting that his draft stock probably could have been salvaged had he just, you know, been a racist or killed someone with his car.
No. Okay, I get that. No pro team wants the type of controversy that having a gay player is going to cause, you know? If he had just been convicted of DUI vehicular manslaughter or obstruction of justice in connection with a murder or had been accused of sexual assault or screamed the N-word at a concert or killed a bunch of dogs and buried 'em in his f***ing yard... You know, "NFL material."
