Tina Fey talks ‘getting the band back together’ for ‘Kimmy Schmidt’ on ‘Today’

It's been a while since Upper Darby's Tina Fey did any press about her new(ish) hit Netflix series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, but that cold streak ended today on Today.

Fey stopped by Today Wednesday morning alongside series star Ellie Kemper and Jane Krakowski to give some insight into Kimmy Schmidt's creation now that the show's first season is solidly in the books. And, as you may have guessed, much of that story revolves around the "awesome trifecta of unbreakable ladies," as Krakowski said.

"We sat around in our office for a really pleasant two weeks, just sitting around thinking about Ellie Kemper," Fey told host Al Roker.

Following that, Fey had her husband, Jeff Richmond, create the extremely persistent Kimmy Schmidt theme song. Richmond and Fey previously worked together on 30 Rock, for which Richmond also did the music.

"It's what they call an 'ear worm,'" Fey said of the Kimmy Schmidt theme.

Fey also spoke a little about her upcoming comedy with Amy Poehler, Sisters, which deals with a pair of adult sisters throwing one last party in their childhood home. Unfortunately, though, it's scheduled to come out the same day as the new Star Wars movie — December 18.

"You know what," Fey said of the clashing release date, "Star Wars has legs — it's going to be there. You don't have to see it the first weekend."

Oddly, though, neither Roker nor Fey and her compatriots made mention of Dr. Fredric Brandt, who committed suicide earlier this year following the popularization of Kimmy Schmidt's Dr. Franff, played by Martin Short. That character was reportedly a caricature of the famous plastic surgeon.
