The Writers Guild of America has released a definitive list of the greatest television shows ever written, essentially ruining your conversational entertainment at happy hours until the end of time.

Members of WGA East and WGA West cast their votes online to determine the 101 greatest shows.

The Sopranos was selected as the best show ever written.

Smug bloggers everywhere (myself included) were validated as Mad Men earned the honor of top show currently running (7th overall), beating The Simsons (11) and Breaking Bad (13). Modern Family (34) finished six spots ahead of Game of Thrones (40). The Shield, Roseanne, and 24 are carry equal merit (71). The Internet's favorite sitcom, Arrested Development, is the 16th best show ever created.

The West Wing rounds out the top 10. Lost came in at 27.

"At their core, all of these wonderful series began with the words of the writers who created them and were sustained by the writers who joined their staffs or worked on individual episodes," said WGAW President Chris Keyser and WGAE President Michael Winship in a joint statement. "This list is not only a tribute to great TV, it is a dedication to all writers who devote their hearts and minds to advancing their craft." [Deadline]
