Seth Meyers slams Philly in ‘Late Night’ opening monologue

Just as the sting of hitchBOT’s death in Old City earlier this month begins to fade, Late Night host Seth Meyers goes and does this.

Just as the sting of hitchBOT's death in Old City earlier this month begins to fade, Late Night host Seth Meyers goes and does this:

The joke, which comes from Wednesday's episode, is based on a recent Conde Nast Traveler survey that ranked Nashville as America's friendliest town, mixed with a little bit of residue from the hitchBOT debacle. But, hey, at least it isn't the usual cliches we get — though it is close.

The Late Show shared the above meme of the joke on the Facebook page Thursday, garnering a somewhat strong response from Philly defenders.

"Don't come to Philly, Seth," wrote one commenter.

"I was there for a week recently," wrote another, "and, yes, besides great Southern food they're super nice and humble."

Well, shucks.

Still, though, for Meyers, this one was low-hanging fruit. Funny low-hanging fruit, but low-hanging fruit all the same.

After all, the hitchBOT assault was one of the most incendiary pop culture incidents to occur in Philadelphia in recent memory. And, as many Philadelphians know, some of the country still chooses to see us as the city that lobbed batteries at Santa Claus, even though we really did that to J.D. Drew more than 15 years ago.

Which, really, is more of a shame for those people than anything. Yuk it up, folks.
