Jon Stewart: Philly sports fans pour beer on babies, are like anti-Islam group

It’s well known that Jon Stewart has a less-than-favorable opinion of Philadelphia but would he really compare Philly sports fans to an anti-Islamic group in Texas? Yes. Yes he would. And he did.

It's well known that Jon Stewart has a less-than-favorable opinion of Philadelphia, but would he really compare Philly sports fans to an anti-Islamic group? Yes. Yes, he would. And he did.

On Monday night's episode of "The Daily Show," Stewart opened with a segment about the events in Garland, Texas, where two shooters attacked an American Freedom of Defense Initiative (AFDI) event. AFDI, a group notorious for its anti-Islamic sentiments, has been responsible for negative ads about Muslims in New York City and protested Park51, aka the "Ground Zero Mosque." On Sunday night, the group was hosting a contest offering a $10,000 prize for the best drawing of the Prophet Muhammad when it was targeted by gunmen said to have ties to ISIS. ISIS has since claimed responsibility for the attack, though no proof exists to support this claim.

The point of Stewart's segment was to underscore that no matter how offensive people are, it's never OK to shoot them.

He brought his point home by, yes, comparing AFDI to Philly sports fans, saying, "AFDI is a First Amendment group the same way people from Philly are sports fans. Ostensibly, they like sports. But really, they're just looking for an excuse to punch a stranger and pour beer on someone's baby."

At least Stewart agrees, despite his ill opinion of Philly sports fans and Philadelphians in general (though his wife is from Philly), that it's not OK to shoot them. Thanks, Jon.
