Vice President (smilin') Joe Biden has been President Obama's point man on gun control for the past few months. On Tuesday, the Veep participated in a Facebook town hall with Parents Magazine when he suggested that semiautomatic weapons aren't the most effective means of defending yourself. Quite simply, he said that you should buy a shotgun.
Speaking with Parents Magazine in a Facebook town hall on Tuesday, Biden said that he has advised his wife, Jill — if she ever has the need to protect herself at their home in Wilmington, Del. — that a double-barreled shotgun should be her weapon of choice.
"I said, 'Jill, if there's ever a problem, just walk out on the balcony here ... walk out and put that double-barrel shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house," Biden said.
He then addressed the controversy surrounding gun control and the limitations of the Second Amendment.
"How can I say this politely?" said Biden, who noted his surprise at some of the questions that were culled from Parents Magazine readers. "The Constitution does allow the government to conclude that there are certain types of weapons that no one can own. Now if that were not the case, then you should be able to go buy a flamethrower like the military ... if you're a billionaire you should be able to buy an F-15 … you should be able to buy an M-1 tank, you should be able to buy a machine gun, you should be able to buy a grenade launcher, and you can't do those things." - The best weapon to use for home defense is probably a shotgun. It can cause a lot of damage without the need for any real precise accuracy. Personally, I think if someone breaks into a home and even hears a shotgun being pumped, may consider leaving very quickly. If you don't know how to shoot a shotgun, or any weapon for that matter, you shouldn't be holding it, let alone defending yourself with it. If a shotgun is killing your arm from a couple rounds then you are holding it wrong and don't know what you're doing.— knowner

Very dangerous assumption. At typical home defense distances, there is not enough space for the shot to spread out; you still need to shoot accurately. - It's actually illegal to fire a warning shot into the air. First of all, if you can get away with firing a warning shot, your situation isn't life threatening enough that you should be discharging your firearm. Secondly, there have been several court cases where people who have fired warning shots have been charged with endangering the lives of innocent people.
