Three free shows, and one epic festival, and your fave 20-something slacker—all to make you feel better about your summer coming to a close

Wednesday, August 28: Kurt Vile

This year—for the first time in history—Philadelphia will celebrate “Kurt Vile Day” on August 28, with a special ceremony at City Hall in which Mayer Nutter will bestow a prestigious Liberty Bell Award upon our fave Fishtowner, then invite the city to watch him jam out (for free!) in the courtyard. It’s crazy to think it’s been 5 years since KV’s first solo record (and launchpoint into fame)—it still feels like just yesterday that he was but a mysterious longhair, setting up shop on a stool (a stool!) weeknights at JB’s, hair covering his face as he strummed his guitar. These days, he’s practically a rock legend, who earned not one but TWO “Best New Music” designations from Pitchfork, in addition to his own mural on Front Street in Fishtown.  It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy, and we’ve loved watching Vile gracefully transition from seated crooner to confident shredder. His latest LP, Wakin on a Pretty Daze, is a free-wheeling collection of tunes that seems practically made for summer barbeques and afternoon drives—from the Springsteen-esque “KV Crimes” to the gorgeous title track. We’re psyched to experience it live this Wednesday!

Philly's largest free gospel festival will hit the Penn's Landing stage on Saturday, August 24.

A powerful lineup of performers will deliver heavenly sets that range from contemporary gospel hits to classical choral hymns. The likes of Hezekiah Walker, Kurt Carr, Tye Tribbett and Erica Campbell of Mary Mary will be in the spotlight along with many other artists.

Local gospel radio station Praise 103.9 will host a New Artists Showcase that will celebrate burgeoning, up-and-coming gospel acts. Camden Sophisticated Sisters Dance Team will also give a stellar performance with their signature steps.

The Dead Milkmen with perform on Saturday at Liberty Lands Park.

The summer’s winding down, but you still have a few more chances to rage.

Wednesday, August 21: JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound

Free at Morgan’s Pier! There are just two free shows left at the Pier this summer, and we’re fairly certain you don’t wanna miss either. This Wednesday, Chicago rock’n soul group JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound ride into Philly, bringing their self-described “soul music by children of the post-punk era” to life. Front man JC Brooks cut his teeth doing musical theater, where his killer pipes (no one does falsetto like Brooks does falsetto) and impassioned, James Brown-inspired dance moves made him an instant sensation. Add a full backing band, funky R&B grooves, and surprisingly sweet+ soulful lyrics, and you have all the ingredients for a laidback summer evening—relaxing o’er the water, cool drink in hand. That is, if you can resist the urge to get up and dance!
