10 events to look forward to in October

Autumn is officially here and there’s plenty to do.

Check out these 10 events happening in October.

CRAFT PHILA Liberty Bell Fair
Saturday, Oct. 3
and Sunday, Oct. 4
6th and 7th Streets between Chestnut and Market Streets
The city’s largest arts fair returns for two days of handmade crafts and clothing by the nation’s top talent. If shopping gets you hungry, numerous food trucks will be on-site including Phoebe's BBQ, Cheese E. Wagon, World Wide Burrito, and 1 Potato Two. Hours: Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

DesignPhiladelphia
Thursday, Oct. 8 through Sunday, Oct. 16
Various locations
Organized by the Philadelphia Center for Architecture, venues throughout Philadelphia will host events highlighting the city’s top engineering companies, workers, and presentations. Most events are free to attend but require registration. The full list is here.

Outfest
Sunday, Oct. 11
13th and Locust Streets
Philadelphia’s largest LGBT block party returns to the Gayborhood for an entire afternoon of live entertainment, vendors and after-parties. Things get started at noon. 

PHeaSt
Friday, Oct. 16
PHS Warehouse (5201 S. 13th St.)
The Pennsylvania Horticulture Society’s annual food event features the area’s top chefs paired with local farmers for an evening of food tastings. Besides the abundance of food, cocktails, beer, and other local beverages will be provided. The event is from 7 to 10 p.m.

Harry Potter Festival
Friday, Oct.16 and Saturday, Oct. 17

Hop on your broomstick and head toward Chestnut Hill for two days of Harry Potter-themed entertainment. Friday will kick off with a conference, followed by a pub crawl. Saturday’s schedule includes a quidditch tournament, a witch hunt, a Sorting Hat demonstration, and more. Both days begin at 10 a.m.

Boo at the Zoo
Saturday, Oct. 17
and Sunday, Oct. 18; Saturday Oct. 24 and Sunday Oct. 25
Philadelphia Zoo (34 W. Girard Ave.)
Not all Halloween events are scary. The zoo invites kids to come in costume and take part in a scarecrow scavenger hunt, trick-or-treat throughout the grounds, and learn about nocturnal animals that roam at night. Hours of each day are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  

Festivus at Franklin Square
Saturday, Oct. 24
Franklin Square (200 6th St.)
If you miss Night Markets, Franklin Square’s Oktober Festivus will bring back Philly’s favorite food trucks. From 4 to 10 p.m., the square will be full of culinary options as well as a pop-up beer garden from Barren Hill Brewery.

PAWS Mutt Strut
Saturday, Oct. 24
Navy Yard (4747 S. Broad St.)
PAWS’ annual event returns to the Navy Yard for a Halloween-themed walk with our yappy friends. The strut kicks off at 11 a.m. and proceeds from the event go toward the animal society’s care to help save and house homeless pets.

PumpkinFest
Saturday, Oct. 31
South Street Headhouse District (200 Pine St.)
Under the Shambles, families can partake in autumn-themed activities such as arts and crafts, hayrides, pumpkin picking, and more. Seasonal food and beverages will be for sale, too. Things start at noon.  

Rock N Roll Half-Marathon
Saturday, Oct.31
Eakins Oval (The Benjamin Franklin Parkway)
Before you celebrate Halloween, go for a run! This Half-Marathon will take participants by historical landmarks, local culture, and mural art located through the city of Brotherly Love. Proceeds from the event will go toward the American Association for Cancer Research.
