Weekend Picks: 5 events worth braving the snow for

White Zombie / The Crime of Dr. Crespi

International House (3701 Chestnut St.)
7 p.m., Friday, $9; $7 seniors and students.

Though it may seem as if the zombie apocalypse afflicting our pop culture dates back to the early 1980s (or maybe 1968's Night of the Living Dead), there's a good argument for 1932, and the Poverty Row classic White Zombie. Starring Bela Lugosi as a voodoo master threatening a damsel in distress and filmed on unused sets with borrowed props and scenery, the film was derided upon its release, but gained critical respect in the 1960s. The movie will screen on a double bill with Republic's cheapie 1935 Poe pastiche The Crime of Doctor Crespi (starring Erich Von Stroheim as a mad scientist).

Curtis 20/21 Ensemble

World Cafe Live (3025 Walnut St.)
8 p.m. Friday, $15; $11 for students

With the Curtis 20/21 Ensemble, jazz singer Joanna Pascale explores the pop-inflected between-the-wars works of George Gershwin, Darius Milhaud, and Edgard Varèse, along with songs by Michel Legrand and a new work by Gabriella Smith.

Mariana Sadovska

Christ Church Neighborhood House (20 N. American St.)
8 p.m., Saturday, $15.

The amazing Ukrainian singer and actress Mariana Sadovska interprets the nearly forgotten folk songs of her country in heartfelt and kinetic performances, accompanying herself on a hand-pumped harmonium. She will play on a bill with performance artist Cynthia Hopkins and composer Rosie Langabeer.

Miami Horror

Coda (1712 Walnut St.)
8:30 p.m. Saturday, $15

So, we work some weird hours. But that means that while you're likely asleep, we're just home and channel-surfing past infomercials for flipping houses and buying cut-rate gems in search of serendipity. Such as: The SoCal-via-Australia retro dance-pop combo Miami Horror performing a dynamite live version of "Love Like Mine" with L.A. neo-disco queen Gaven Turek on Carson Daly's late show.

Imani Winds

Philadelphia Museum of Art (26th and the Parkway)
3 p.m., Sunday, $24

The sensational Imani Winds play works by Valerie Coleman, Rimsky-Korsakov, Piazzolla, Anders Hillborg, Paquito D'Rivera, and Simon Shaheen.
